These Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage Bites are one of my favorite appetizers I can quickly whip up! Layers of chicken sausage smothered in a sauteed onion glaze, they are always a guest favorite!

Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage
These bites are gluten free and done in just 10 minutes!
Who doesn’t love a quick appetizer for when last minute guests call?
For this recipe, I purchased al fresco’s “Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage” one day while looking for a healthier way to enjoy my favorite foods, sausage.
*And no they did not pay me to write this, I just really like this sausage!!
I had never tried it before but was curious when I saw that it was made with real maple syrup and (being a huge fan of the syrup and sausage combo) I tossed a couple packages in my cart!
When I got home home I threw them in the freezer until I was ready to use them.
I actually forgot about them until one day my husband tells me his friend and friend’s wife are coming over.
I did not have much in the fridge so I rummaged through the freezer and spotted the chicken sausage!
I pulled a package out and ran it under some hot water until they were soft enough to cut up, all the while pondering what I was going to do with them.
They already come pre-cooked, so there was not much that needed to be done to them. With that said, they definitely needed a little “sprucing up”.
So boring story short, I came up with this quick flavorful recipe. And to be honest, the chicken sausage is already packed with flavor so this glaze just takes these over the top!
To Skewer or Not to Skewer
Skewering these is a fun presentation that also looks fancy. It takes a little longer to prepare but your guests will appreciate being able to grab a toothpick without silverware or plates!
If you don’t feel like skewering or are having very casual company, then just toss these babies on a plate and serve! You can even serve the toothpick skewers on the side if you’d like!
I have served this in a small bowl alongside of some good cheese, crackers/bread, and some veggies. Filling, delicious and it all just goes perfectly together!
They could not be any easier to prepare and your guests will LOVE them! They are also gluten-free!

Slice the sausages about 1″-1.5″ thick.
Lay flat and saute the sausage until nicely browned.
Add cornstarch and mix until dissolved.
Lay out chicken sausages on a large plate.
Or serve in a small bowl!
You can stack these babies also!!
These Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage Bites are one of my favorite appetizers I can quickly whip up! Layers of chicken sausage smothered in a sauteed onion glaze, they are always a guest favorite!
- 1 12 oz. package Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage (I used al fresco but any brand would work)
- 1 Medium Red Onion (Coarsely chopped)
- 1 Tbsp Brown Sugar
- 1 Tbsp Cornstarch
- 2 Tbsp Chopped Parsley
- 2 Tbsp Butter/Oil
- 1/2 Cup Water
-
Slice sausage into ½ inch rounds.
-
Saute on high in oil/butter until browned on both sides.
-
Turn heat to medium and saute onions for about 1 minute. They should still have some bite to them.
-
Add cornstarch and with sausage and onions and stir until chicken and onions are coated and cornstarch is fully dissolved.
-
Turn heat to high and add water, stirring until thickened. (If too thick, add more water)
-
Mix in sugar, parsley and pinch of salt for one minute and turn off heat.
-
If skewering, skewer one sausage and one onion square and then repeat. If not skewering, add entire pan to a shallow bowl and serve!
Party Tips*
Skewer ahead of time and keep in fridge. Reheat in microwave when ready!
Throw these in a crock pot if you want to keep them warm! (Add more water if it thickens too much!

I’ve never heard of chicken sausage, but, of course, Wegman’s has. Made the recipe this evening. Very tasty and not complicated to make.
I’m so glad you liked it!! 🙂
