Kielbasa vs. Hot Dogs

I always keep a boatload of kielbasa in our freezer!

I will slice it up before I freeze it so it’s easy to toss into a rice dish or with some pasta!

Because it is already full of flavor and is pre-cooked so it really doesn’t need much TLC!

So anyway, when looking at all of the frozen kielbasa slices, I immediately thought, bite sized corn dogs!!

Most kielbasa are pre-cooked making this recipe much less intimidating! Why? Well you don’t need to worry about whether the inside of these bites are “done”! Just brown the batter and they’re ready!

So then why kielbasa and not hot dogs?? ….other than the fact that I had way too much in the freezer…

Because kielbasa is made with a better quality meat compared to hot dogs. Less fillers and binders are used which is always a plus. It is also why kielbasa costs a bit more than hot dogs.

So for this recipe, I recommend getting the best kielbasa you can find. It will make Mini Kielbasa Dijon Corn Dogsthese Dijon corn bites so much better!

Note* Some kielbasa will have a casing around it. If yours has one, simply score the side lengthwise and remove it with your hands like I did here so you aren’t stuck chewing and chewing and chewing and…well you get it.

Dijon Corn Batter

Mustard naturally goes very well with hot dogs and since kielbasa is just a better version of the hot dog, why not add some Dijon to the corn batter?

By the way, I rarely use yellow mustard. Dijon is my go-to! It just tastes SO much more natural to me and has a unique kick I appreciate.

Adding some Dijon to the batter gives these babies an extra “mustardy” bite. Oh and for what its worth, I am NOT a huge mustard fan and still love the taste!

The best way to make these in advance is to do all the frying the morning of and keep warm in the oven at about 200-250° F before guests arrive.

Then drizzle with Dijon sour cream and stick in your skewers!

You can also serve the Dijon sour cream on the side or use ketchup instead or heck, BOTH like I did in this photo! —>

A melty cheese sauce would be divine too!

Throw these in the oven alongside of these 5 ingredient Mini Kale Stuffed Mushrooms while waiting for your guests to arrive!

So here’s what I did…

Remove casing from sausage if you can!

Whisk together batter. It should be thick!

Using a fork, coat your kielbasa bites nicely in the batter and drop them in the oil slowly.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 lb. Cooked Kielbasa ((casing removed))

Dijon Corn Batter

  • 2 Tbsp. Dijon
  • 1/2 Cup Cornmeal
  • 2/3 Cup Flour
  • 1 Tsp. Baking Powder
  • 1 Cup Milk
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 3/4 Tsp. Salt
  • 1 Tbsp. Sugar

Dijon Sour Cream

  • 1/2 Cup Sour Cream
  • 1/4 Cup Dijon
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  • Heat oil in small sauce pan (at least 2" high) to 350-375 F.
  • Slice kielbasa into 1.5" rounds or desired size. I was able to get about 20 bites from 3/4 lb.
  • Mix up corn batter.
  • Throw all slices of kielbasa in and add them one at a time to fryer.
  • Do not overcrowd them or they will stick together and bring the oil temperature down resulting in greasy bites! I only fried 4 at a time.
  • Drain on paper towels and keep warm in oven until ready to serve.
  • Serve with sauce drizzled and skewers in if you have!

Recipe Notes

Keep these warm in the oven until guests arrive!
You can freeze these and warm them up in the oven also if you do not want to fry the day of your party!
