These Turkey Avocado Roll Ups With Thyme Dressing are the perfect cold snack to serve to your guests when you don’t want to fuss in the kitchen. The dressing is what takes these everyday turkey roll ups over the top. It will become your go-to dressing for almost any sandwich you make!
How To Make A GOOD Looking Roll Up (Wrap)
Roll ups? Really Aleka? Don’t you just ROLL THEM UP??
Yes, yes I know. They don’t sound hard so what’s the big deal?
WELL in my days, I have made my fair share of crappy roll ups. You know, the measly looking kind that just look so sad and no one wants to go near.
The trick to making a “Good Looking” roll up:
- Alternate your colors
- Don’t be stingy with what’s inside
- Use a good sauce/dressing
If you want roll ups that look hearty and that say, “come eat me”, you want to be able to see ALL of what’s inside. All you need to do is choose colorful food like the avocado, greens and red onion like I used here. Or you can add some roasted red peppers and/or tomatoes for some pops of red! And thennnnn, fill that tortilla up!! You could even double the meat in this recipe if you want to. This way, when you roll it, you will see all the yummy layers.
I also believe using a good sauce is the way to go! Otherwise it may be dry. No one likes a dry sandwich, wrap, roll up, toast, anything that’s dry.
This is where you can get super creative! Honey mustard? Ranch? Chipotle cream? Really, all of these would be delicious on this roll up but I chose to use a combination of mayo, honey and mustard with some fresh thyme. Perfect!
It is my go-to spread for any and all sandwiches lately and Derek LOVES it.
For these turkey avocado roll ups, I used LARGE tortillas. The 9″ kind. I always tend to keep these tortillas in the freezer because they are quick to defrost and are so versatile!
My local grocer has the large wraps that come in sun dried tomato, spinach, black bean and your regular white flour so keep an eye out for different kinds. Colors are definitely something to think about when serving food because you want PRETTY food right? Or, for the men, ‘eye-catching’ food.
So one thing I want to emphasize is that corn tortillas are NOT something I ever use. I just do not enjoy the flavor or texture of them. Unless, of course, they are deep fried. THEN you can hand me over the salsa and I’ll get at it. 😉
Gluten-Free Options?
If you are looking for a gluten-free roll up ideas, then of course, flour tortillas are not what you want.
Thankfully the gluten-free options these days are anything but limited. I have seen gluten-free tortillas made with gluten-free flour so if you can spot them, grab them! Otherwise the corn tortillas would be the way to go. (Even though I do not like them, you may love them!) 😉
Creamy Thyme Dressing
This thyme dressing is mayonnaise based…
Funny because I used to HATE mayonnaise. When I say hate, I mean I DESPISED the stuff!
I mean, would YOU dip a spoon into a mayo jar and lick it off? No. Didn’t think so.
The only time I was forced to taste mayo straight was in my culinary class I took in college.
It was actually the FIRST recipe I made in that class. We had to make mayo by hand using just egg yolk, oil, lemon juice and a little mustard. It took foreverrrrr to whisk! I hated that we had to taste test it but I did it….and haven’t done it since!
I just don’t like having it straight. Butttt as I have gotten older, I started to appreciate it more especially mixing in other herbs and condiments.
Now, I can’t have a sandwich or wrap WITHOUT it. It just serves as the perfect foundation for any sauce or dressing.
What makes it 10x better in my opinion is mixing it with some honey, sugar, dijon, herbs, etc. The dressing/sauce can make or break a sandwich so it is important that you have a good go-to dressing and that you aren’t stingy with it!
So I decided to make a creamy thyme dressing to spread on this tortilla before I rolled it up.
It’s delicious on anything. Just make sure you use FRESH thyme. That’s a must!
Roll ups OR A Wrap
You can really eat this as an entire wrap if you prefer! I do this for lunch when I am the only person eating it.
But if I am expecting people over, I will then cut them into these mini roll ups.
I made these for brunch at my house recently and loved that I could make them AHEAD of time, cut them up and let them sit while I finished up other items.
Just do this a few hours ahead or the night before if you are planning on hosting a brunch or having a midday party. Just place them on the platter you plan to serve them on and then cover them with plastic wrap until guests arrive.
These roll ups are also super versatile!
If your gluten-free, they have gluten-free tortillas at most grocers.
Don’t have turkey? Use chicken or ham!
Don’t like thyme? Use parsley or basil or leave it out!
Try these Easy Ricotta Roasted Red Pepper Crostini for another quick appetizer to serve!
Here is what I did…
Mix up your thyme dressing.
Spread dressing generously onto one tortilla wrap.
Add some mixed greens.
Lay your turkey slices to cover entire tortilla.
Follow with a layer of cheese.
Now roll it up!! Not TOO tight though or you will squeeze everything out. Add a layer of dressing on the edge so it will close nicely.
Trim edges! (That’s your snack for working hard)
Cut mini rolls using a sharp knife! You should get about five roll ups.
